When Is the Best Time to Take Newborn Photos?

One of the first questions I’m asked by expectant parents is:
“When should we schedule our newborn photo?” or "When is the best time to take newborn photos?"
It’s a great question — because timing can make all the difference in the look and feel of your baby’s first portraits. As a professional newborn photographer, I’ve worked with babies as young as 2 days old and as “newborns” at 6+ weeks. While all babies are beautiful at any age, there is a sweet spot for that classic, sleepy, curled-up newborn look.
Here’s everything you need to know about the best time to take newborn photos and how to prepare.
The Ideal Window: 5 to 14 Days Old
The very best time to photograph a newborn is typically between 5 and 14 days old.
During this time:
Baby is still super sleepy and easier to pose.
They still curl up naturally (like they did in the womb).
Feeding and sleep patterns (somewhat!) settle into a rhythm.
If you’re after those peaceful, squishy, posed portraits — this is the golden window.

What If My Baby Is Older?
Life doesn’t always go to plan — and that’s totally okay!
2–4 Weeks Old:
Baby may be more alert and less flexible.
Posing might be simpler, but we can still get beautiful wrapped, snuggly images.
Every baby is different and 2-4 weeks baby still can go wrapped and some squishy posed.
1–2 Months Old:
Baby likely has more expressions and eye contact.
Awake shots become the focus.
So yes — it’s never too late for newborn photos. The style may shift a little, but the magic is still there.
We have taken lots of babies with this age, and we know how to safely posed younger or older babies. Below is the 1-month old newborn picture.

Tip: Book Before Baby Arrives
I always recommend booking your newborn session during your second or third trimester. I’ll pencil in your due date and stay flexible around your baby’s actual arrival. Once your little one is born, just shoot me a quick message, and we’ll lock in your date within that ideal window.
Final Thoughts,
Every baby is different — and beautiful — no matter the timing. While the first two weeks offer the most flexibility for classic newborn poses, there is no wrong time to celebrate your baby’s arrival with meaningful photos.
The most important thing? You’ll never regret capturing these moments.
