As a newborn photographer, one of the most common questions I get is:"What to Wear for Newborn Photos"
The right outfits can make a huge difference — they help set the tone, enhance the softness of the images, and keep the focus where it belongs: on your beautiful new baby. Whether you’re planning a studio session, an in-home lifestyle shoot, or hospital fresh 48 photos, here are my tips for dressing the whole family.
1. Keep It Soft, Neutral, and Simple
When in doubt, neutrals are best.
Think whites, creams, grays, soft pastels, and earthy tones. These shades keep the focus on your baby, photograph beautifully, and feel timeless.
Avoid:
Bold patterns
Neon colors
Large logos or text
These can distract from the emotion of the image and may clash with soft baby tones. You want the viewer to direct eyes on emotions/feel not the pattern or color.

2. Dress for Connection and Comfort
Newborn sessions involve lots of snuggling, holding, and sometimes feeding — so comfort matters.
Mom Tips:
Choose flowy dresses, knits, or tops with soft textures.
Button-up tops are great for nursing.
Light makeup and neutral nail polish work beautifully.
Dad Tips:
Stick to plain shirts or henleys in neutral tones.
Avoid stiff dress shirts or anything too formal unless that's your vibe.
Siblings:
Keep their outfits simple and in the same palette as parents.
Avoid characters or bright patterns.
3. What Should Baby Wear?
The simpler, the better — because newborns are already perfect.
I usually provide all clothing, knits and wraps for baby, so you dont have to bring anything for the newborn. Usually you keep it simple for baby when you bring baby in studio, so baby outfit can be easily removable, and we wont wake up baby.

4. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical outfits. Instead, choose colors that blend well together.
Example family palette:
Mom in a cream dress
Dad in a soft gray or beige shirt
Baby swaddled in a muted pink wrap
Sibling in soft white or tan
Think of it like curating a soft color story.

5. Plan Ahead & Bring a Backup
Accidents happen (hello, spit-up!). I recommend bringing:
A backup shirt for mom or dad
A burp cloth or swaddle blanket
For studio session, I can help style the session based on your space and light — so don't stress if you’re unsure.
